"The Waltons" is an American television series created by Earl Hamner Junior based on the book "Spencers Mountain". The show centers around the family in a rural Virginia community during the Great Depression and World War II. The series ran for nine seasons and produced three television movie sequels, distributed by Warner Bros.
The main story takes place on Walton's mountain a fictional town but the actual place is in a city called Schuyler Virginia. The time period takes place from 1933 to 1946 during the presidential administrations of Roosevelt and Truman. A span of 13 years is covered in nine seasons which includes the time of Pres. John F. Kennedy's assassination, not necessarily chronologically correct.
The story centers around John Walton Junior known as John boy, his parents John and Olivia Walton and their seven children. John boy is the oldest who becomes a journalist and novelist and each episode is narrated by him, actually the voice of Earl Hamner on which John boy is based. John Senior makes a living by operating a lumber mill and the family shares what they have with relatives and strangers as they are able like Godsey is the postmaster and runs a general store. The entire family except for John Senior attend a Baptist Church which was the actual Schuyler Baptist Church near the Hamner homeplace and is still in operation. The signature scene closes each episode where the family house is in darkness but one or two lights in the upstairs bedroom windows are still on.
One or two of the family members make some brief comments but then bid each other good night after which the lights go out. John boy eventually ends up going on to the University and later to New York City to work as a journalist. Several of the siblings marry and start their own families and World War II deeply affects them all. All four of the Walton boys enlist in the military. John boys’ military plane is shot down.
The miniseries was filmed at the Warner Bros. Studios in California but his inspiration is truly the small town of Schuyler Virginia. There was some backlash from the government regarding rural oriented shows at that time and was given an undesirable timeslot. however it's popularity won "the Waltons "the Prime time Emmy award for Outstanding Drama Series.
